I Do Like to Talk

by alexis

And Mark Spencer and Steve Martin do their level best to keep me going in this hour and a half interview on MacBreak Live, wherein I discuss how I got started with color correction in the first place, why I like using Resolve, control surfaces, monitors, grading for the web, how I organize grades, how to move projects from Final Cut Pro X to Resolve, why experience matters, and what I think distinguishes colorists who take the craft seriously. It was a fun chat, I hope you like it.

I searching for a reference monitor, you talk about the Panasonic VT30 I think, but what is the link where I can buy the software and hardware.
I was looking the flanders scientific for reference monitor, is only 24 inch, but I think for my kind of work and clients is good. Something about 3000 dolars like the HP dreamcolor, what you think about this monitor. Sorry my bad English. Cheers from Costa Rica.

For calibrating my VT30 Panasonic plasma, right now I’m using a Klein K-10 color probe in conjunction with Lightspace CMS (color management software) to analyze the monitor and generate a calibration LUT that I apply using an HDLink HD-SDI to HDMI convertor, and the results are excellent.

For an LCD, I like the Flanders. Good features, good price, and the fact that the company will calibrate it for you frees you from the added expense (though shipping isn’t free).

Hi Alexis,
thanks for this interview, very interesting.

I have a couple of question about the calibration of the VT30 Panasonic (and the plasmas in general).

I have heard that they have to be re-calibrated often. What’s your experience on this?

At the moment I am wondering if I should buy a LCD grade monitor (the JVC DT-R24L4DU could be my choice) or a plasma. For a studio monitor the calibration is pretty simple (blue mode, etc.) so it is not a problem. The great things about the plasma are the blacks, the size and the price (way cheaper than the JVC or the FS)
Can I ask the total price of the “plasma calibration kit” (Klein K10 + Lightspace CMS)?

Thanks!

Hello Alexis,

i live in middle east and Panasonic does not sell the VT30. They say it is only US and EUROPE market.

There is the P55VT50 instead, does it have the same quality and performance to be used for color grading with Davinci?

The VT50 is the successor to my VT30 series, and everything I’ve read indicates that it’s a slight improvement in many ways. If you calibrate it appropriately, it should be fine.

Talking of Flanders…

FSI has just announced they have added LightSpace CMS compatibility to their 10bit displays!

See: http://www.lightillusion.com/zippdf/fsi_adds_lightspace_compatibility.pdf

The LM-2461W, LM-2460W, and CM-170 now feature custom calibration 3D LUT import capabilities! These units can now import calibration LUTs created in FSI’s 64x64x64 3D LUT format. Specifically, we are are pleased to announce that customers using the latest version of LightIllusion’s world-renowned LightSpace application can begin exporting 3D LUTs in this format right away for easy import and use on their monitors! This adds a whole new level of flexibility allowing for custom calibration, user created color spaces, integration with a wide range of popular probes, and custom LUT manipulation.
